Mindfulness Meditation with Chien Hoong Gooi

Afternoon Tea at Vi’s
Date: Wednesday 28th July 2010
Time: 2pm-5.30pm
Venue: Vi’s place (I will send you my address once you have RSVP’d). My house is a 4 minute walk from railway station.
What: I will bake some treats, you can bring fruit. We will drink tea (or coffee if you prefer) and have a little catch up chats.
Why: It’s been a while since we hung out! And it's fun to eat cak.

 

WEEKLY MEDITATION

Guided meditation will be held weekly on campus at UTS. Meditation is a useful practice to develop habitually as it has been proven to help us relax, concentrate better, reduce stress, control negative thoughts, increase creativity, improve happiness and more! DHARMA TALK -“Calming the Roller Coaster of Emotions”

Venerable Thubten Chokyi is a Tibetan Buddhist nun in the gelugpa tradition and resident at Vajrayana Institute where she runs meditation classes. She has been meditating for many years and recommends this practice for anyone wanting to bring mindfulness and equanimity into the activities of everyday life

DAY-TRIP TO SANTI FOREST MONASTERY

Santi Forest Monastery is a Buddhist community for monks, nuns, and laypeople. It's located on 150 acres of eucalyptus forest, cliffs, waterfalls, and caves adjoining Morton National Park in the rugged landscape of Australia's Southern Highlands, about halfway between Sydney and Canberra. It was established by Bhante Sujato, with his teacher Ajahn Brahm, the abbot of Bodhinyana Buddhist Monastery in Western Australia, as its first Spiritual Director. Santi Forest Monastery is owned by Santi Forest Monastery Incorporated, a not-for-profit charitable association.

We will be spending a day at Santi along with our friends from Macbuddhi and Unibodhi from Sydney and Macquarie Universities, as well as our friends from the MITRA Youth Buddhist Network.

When: TBC

Time: Meet at 8:00am, arriving back in Sydney around 6:30pm.

Anyone is free to stay overnight at the monastery. There is a station nearby the monastery which can deliver you back to Sydney.

DHARMA TALK - "Being Happy"

Jim Teoh has been teaching Buddhist courses for over ten years. During this time he has taught numerous courses and meditation sessions at Buddhist Library. He has been teaching meditation class at Bodhikusuma since the centre opened in 2002.

DHARMA TALK – “Successful Relationships with Others”

Venerable Neng Rong has earned her Masters in Educational Administration at UNSW in 1993 and her Masters of Arts (Buddhist Studies) from the Taiwan Chung Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies in 1999. The Venerable has done extensive work in teaching of scripture classes for both primary and high school students. She is also involved in teaching Buddhism to university student groups from UNSW, Sydney University, Macquarie University and University of Technology. The Venerable helps with providing support, advice, and counselling for the university Buddhist community and any other members of the university community in general.

VESAK DAY CELEBRATION

Vesak is the holiest day in Buddhism. On this day are celebrated the birth, the Enlightenment, and the death of the Buddha. Traditionally on this day UTS hosts a celebration with our friends from Macbuddhi and Unibodhi as well as the MITA Youth Buddhist Network.

DHARMA TALK – “Ask a monk! Q&A”

Venerable Sujato (Anthony Best) was born in Perth, Western Australia. After playing rock n’ roll guitar professionally in a successful popular band called Martha’s Vineyard for several years, he went to Thailand in 1992. Besides spending 3 years in Bodhinyana monastery with Ajahn Brahm, he also spent several years in remote hermitages and caves in Thailand and Malaysia. In recent years Venerable Sujato has taught Dhamma and meditation to a varied audience in his local area and internationally, and has spoken at several major international Buddhist conferences and events.
